Winter
If there's a #wonderland, it's definitely South Tyrol in the winter. From December to April, the Ahrn Valley is the ideal holiday destination for winter sports enthusiasts. Skiing, cross-country skiing, tobogganing, snowshoeing, ski touring, ice climbing and ice skating. Any questions?
Ski trips
The ski bus stops directly in front of our main house and takes you to one of the three surrounding ski areas:
The two ski areas Klausberg and Speikboden with the village lifts Weißenbach and Rein in Taufers together form the Skiworld Ahrntal. A single ski pass makes it possible to ski over 74 kilometres of slopes, while 21 lifts at an altitude of 950 to 2,510 metres take you up the mountain. The Skiworld Ahrn Valley guarantees 100 % snow reliability thanks to snowmaking systems covering the entire area.
The Speikboden ski area is only 3km away from our apartments in Mühlen in Taufers and can be reached in about 5 minutes by car or bus. A family-friendly ski landscape awaits you here with a total of 7 lifts up to 2,400 metres above sea level. Both beginners and professionals will feel at home here on the different, well-groomed slopes and in the terrain.
A few villages and less than 15km further away, in Steinhaus, lies the Klausberg ski area. Here you will also find great slopes with different levels of difficulty, suitable for children and beginners as well as for advanced skiers.
The largest ski area in South Tyrol - the Kronplatz - is located 20 kilometres from our apartements. 116 km of slopes and 32 lifts guarantee endless fun in the snow. The Kronplatz is also easily accessible by car or ski bus. A day trip to the Dolomites is not only worthwhile for summer hikes, but also on skis in the winter. Here you can enjoy the famous sellaronda, a spectacular one-day tour taking in 16 miles slopes and four different valleys. An unbeatable panorama and 27 km of slopes wait for you at a distance of about 50 km.
As our houseguest you get a 10% discount on the ski rental "Hermann's Skistadl" at Campo Tures.
Cross-country skiing
Glide over the trails through the meadows and woods on a sunny day, breathe the fresh mountain air and admire the surrounding nature.
In the mountain village Rein in Taufers at 1600m four different tracks are offered, from 3 to 12km with different degrees of difficulty. You will get an insight into the biathlon world under the guidance of former biathlete of the German national team, Barbara Ertl.
At the end of the Ahrn Valley, in Kasern, you go up and down on the more demanding Sonnenloipe (approx. 10km long). Several cozy alpine huts are located on the way and offer tasty South Tyrolean cuisine.
By the way: Kasern is also worth a visit without skis!
The alpine and family village Weißenbach at 1300m attracts many guests with its 10 km long cross-country ski run with a total height difference of 110m.
The 16 km long Mühlwald-Lappach trail starts at the restaurant Meggima (also worth a visit) at the lake in Mühlwald and leads through meadows and forests past mountain farms to Lappach.
In Antholz you have the possibility to try out biathlon. Every year in January the Biathlon World Cup takes place there. The Biathlon Centre is about a one-hour drive from Mühlen and offers exciting races to cheer for.
Our cross-country trails are part of Dolomiti Nordicski - Europe's biggest cross-country carousel with 1,300 km of tracks - view of the trails
Toboggan
A sleigh ride on one of the various natural toboggan runs should not be missed during a winter visit to the Ahrn Valley. Walk up, reward yourself with a dish of delicious South Tyrolean dumplings, toboggan down, enjoy life.
Weißenbach
The Tristenbach toboggan run in Weißenbach is a tobogganing experience of a special kind. The 4.5 km long, snow-sure and perfectly groomed natural toboggan run winds its way through snow-covered forests up to three sun-drenched alpine pastures.
Mühlwald
A long-distance downhill run from the Weizgruberalm to Mühlwald in an idyllic winter landscape - an insider tip for every enthusiastic tobogganist.
Speikboden and Klausberg
For those who prefer it more comfortable, take the lift and save the tedious way up.
The longest toboggan run in South Tyrol is waiting for you on the Speikboden. You ride 10km leisurely on a very well groomed - and if necessary even artificially snowed - toboggan run down to Luttach.
At Klausberg the slope is open once a week for night tobogganers.
Snowshoeing
Everyone who is looking for untouched nature with the most beautiful view should put on their snowshoes.
Go into the most beautiful winter landscapes away from the slopes, enjoy the tranquillity of nature and take pictures that will make your friends envious. #ThisIsSouthTyrol
Ski tours
Professional tourers can let off steam on the 83 surrounding three thousand metre peaks (alpine tours such as the Dreiherrenspitze in the Ahrn Valley, the Schwarzenstein in Luttach, or the Weißzint in Lappach take your breath away in the truest sense of the word). Beginners have enough easier tours to choose from to get a feel for the new trend sport.
We are also enthusiastic ski tour hikers and are happy to help you plan your next tour!
Ice sports
Ice-climbing fans will find numerous icefalls in Rein and Lappach and can try their hand at ice climbing.
The ice rink in Mühlen is located at just a one-minute walk from our apartments. Perfect for kids!
